Opening Day!

It's opening day!

Okay, well, it's not opening day of hunting season or anything but it *IS* opening day of this coonhound training blog! ;-)

My husband, John, and I live in Michigan. Training season has just begun here and we are revving those coonhound youngsters up. First thing we did to prepare for training season was deciding not to breed our superb female, Ruby. How we would have LOVED another puppy from her after how her last two we kept 2 yrs ago turned out. But training had to come first. You see, Ruby is our puppy trainer. Ruby is a 6 yr old UKC/AKC Redbone Coonhound.

redbone coonhound female. Puppies due in April!

Ruby doesn't have special training or a degree in education... she's simply a coonhound who is full of heart and determination. She also possesses a one track mind! Raccoon! When she is out hunting, she is in 'the zone'. She's accurate, loud, intense and CONTAGIOUS! When you throw a puppy or two into the hunt, she doesn't mind. In fact, she doesn't even notice! They can jump all over her, get in her face and in general - do absolutely anything in their power to distract her. But it doesn't work. She could care less. She's 'in the zone'. Once she catches scent of a trail, the game is on. It doesn't take long for those puppies to start playing her game. (after all, she obviously wasn't going to play theirs) Puppies are trained in no time flat with a hound like Ruby.

This year, Ruby will have her hands full with redbone and english coonhound students, as do we. We thought it may be fun to start a blog of our adventures. Join us!
